15 injured as gas explodes in Lagos

Fifteen persons, including children, sustained various injuries following a gas explosion in Ijora-Badia, Lagos State, on Sunday.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 pm on Amosu Street, Ijora Badia, within the Apapa Iganmu LCDA.

A leaking 25kg gas cylinder in a mini shop ignited due to naked flames, triggering the explosion.

The resulting fire spread rapidly to five additional gas cylinders and engulfed the entire building, which housed a 15-room studio apartment and seven shops. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze and evacuate the cylinders to prevent further escalation.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that no fatalities were reported, and the fire was successfully extinguished.

The agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, in a statement on Sunday, said the gas leakage was caused by mishandling of products, confirming that it was the leaking cylinder that attracted a nearby flame before the explosion.

Adeseye also confirmed that none of the injured 15 persons had a life threatening case.

“Fifteen persons both adults and children sustained varying degrees of injuries. A number of the victims have been administered first aids and others have been taken to the hospital. It is however pertinent to state that none of the cases are life threatening,” said Adeseye.
