The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that Nigerian telecommunication consumers collectively spent a staggering N3.33 trillion on calls, data, SMS, and other telecom services throughout the year 2022.

According to the NCC’s recently published ‘2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report,’ telecommunications companies also raked in a total revenue of N3.33 trillion during the same period.

The report highlighted a significant increase in active subscribers, with the number climbing from 195,463,898 subscriptions in 2021 to a substantial 222,571,568 active voice subscriptions by December 2022. This marked a robust year-on-year rise of 13.86 percent.

The NCC attributed the expansion in the subscriber base to various factors, including subscriber loyalty, promotional campaigns, seasonal trends, vigorous consumer recruitment efforts, and competitive product offerings across all networks.

This surge in active subscriptions exerted a positive influence on related telecom metrics like teledensity, Internet penetration, and broadband penetration, according to the report.

In terms of data consumption, 2022 witnessed continued growth, with data usage surging by 46.77 percent to reach 518,381.78 terabytes by the year’s end.

The NCC stated, “There was an increase in the volume of data consumed at the year-end December 2022 when compared with the year-end December 2021.

“The total volume of data consumed by subscribers increased to 518,381.78TB as of December 2022 from 353,118.89TB as of December 2021. This represents an increase of 46.77 per cent in data consumption within the period.”
