The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has dispelled rumors circulating online that it has initiated an indefinite nationwide strike.
Contrary to online reports suggesting that the union commenced its planned strike on Friday after the expiry of its ultimatum to the federal government on Thursday, NLC’s Head of Department for Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, confirmed that “The report is not true.”
Online reports had indicated that organized labor was set to embark on a strike to protest the government’s failure to meet its demands, particularly in relation to providing adequate palliatives to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
NLC had previously undertaken a two-day warning strike on September 5 and 6, following which it issued a 14-day ultimatum.
Efforts by the government to avert an indefinite strike have yet to yield results, as the union remains firm in its stance to shut down the economy if its demands are not met.
While workers await further instructions, NLC has urged the general public to disregard the viral reports about an ongoing strike.
