The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment on Thursday to demolish buildings that do not meet its integrity standards.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this declaration following the collapse of 14 structures near the sites of two buildings engulfed in flames at Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island earlier in the week.
Sanwo-Olu expressed dismay at the situation, emphasizing the preventable nature of the disaster. He noted that several residential apartments had been converted into warehouses, increasing the risk of such incidents.
The governor warned that more buildings would likely face demolition after undergoing extensive tests.
Addressing the media at the fire site, Sanwo-Olu lamented the delays faced by first responders in accessing the scene and emphasized the need for accountability.
He attributed the cause of the fire to “gross carelessness,” although a comprehensive report was pending.
In response to the incident, the governor announced the indefinite closure of Dosunmu Market while pledging government assistance to affected traders.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing building regulations and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that any property found to violate construction standards would be demolished promptly.
Despite the challenges posed by such disasters, he underscored the importance of prioritizing progressive initiatives over dealing with avoidable accidents, highlighting the need to allocate resources wisely.
