Proofreader/Copy Editor
Purpose of the Job
- Copy editor/proofreader is to assist in ensuring that texts due for publication are well written and grammatically correct.
- S/he checks basic spelling, punctuation, typographical errors, style consistency or accuracy using the original document and makes sure that the structure and content of the document are equally good.
- Performs a ‘quality check’ on all publications before they go to print.
- S/he will get involved in typesetting of scripture text after Typesetters have done their jobs.
- It is the proofreader’s role to act as a fresh pair of eyes, spotting any mistake(s) others might have missed.
Nature and Scope of Position
The Proof Reader / Copy Editor is a Senior Staff Member of the BSN with the following responsibilities:
- Resolving queries directly with the Typesetters and translators, e.g., style and text inconsistencies.
- Spotting and correcting spelling mistakes, punctuation and grammatical errors.
- Creating artwork briefs to detail the content of illustrations.
- Ensuring that illustrations are correctly captioned and referred to in the text.
- Producing or working to a style checklist to ensure consistency in hyphenation, capitalization, formatting of references, etc.
- Sub-editing text written by a number of authors to ensure consistent house style.
- Preparing preliminary pages for the title, contents and preface of a publication.
- Ensuring that text matches the original.
- Ensuring that spelling and style are correct and consistent.
- Ensuring that page numbers, headings and captions are correct.
- Scrutinizing documents to the minute detail in order to identify errors.
- Identifying the common proof errors that are often missed by translators.
- Using a structured proofreading process to ensure error-free copy.
- Ensuring that good editorial work has been done on materials to be published by describing the overall work done from the editorial context, design, illustration, etc. to handing over the electronic text for production.
- Ensuring that the final presentation of text, illustrations and design features of the publication are error-free and complete.
- Ensuring safekeeping, archiving and re-using of materials used for Publishing.
- Working closely with the Translation Officer(s) and Publishing Staff to ensure completeness, correctness and accuracy of all materials/items submitted for publication.
- S/he shall be responsible for the editorial work of all Publications of The Bible Society of Nigeria.
- Providing necessary support to ensure that BSN newsletter is published on scheduled dates on quarterly basis, as shown below.
- January-March edition – February 15 is the deadline.
- April-June edition – May 15 is the deadline.
- July-September edition – August 15 is the deadline.
- October-December edition – November 15 is the deadline.
Entry Requirements
- A minimum of First Degree in English Language, Linguistics, or Mass Communication with working knowledge in Biblical Studies (Theology) background from a recognized university.
- A minimum of 2 years experience as a translator, editor, or publishing officer in a reputable publishing organization.
Candidates will need to show evidence of the following:
- Biblical knowledge
- Versatility in I.Tskills, especially Microsoft Office.
- A high-level oral and written communication skill.
- A methodical working style.
- High level of concentration, accuracy, and great attention to detail.
- Tact and diplomacy for negotiating changes with translators and typesetters.
- Ability to stay focused throughout an entire document, which may be long.
- A committed Christian with deep understanding of the Bible.
Audit Officer
Key Responsibilities
- Review the reconciliation of Bank account statements of The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) and that of International Support Programme (ISP) and report to the Audit Manager monthly.
- Influence Audit Assistants to achieve 100% of their Bible Distribution, Fundraising, sale of Bible Guest House rooms and halls.
- Compile weekly and monthly reports for business and management meetings by 1pm on Fridays and 10th of the following month respectively.
- Unannounced review of revenue and operations of Bible Guest House monthly and report to the Audit Manager within 24 hours after completing the assignment.
- Ensure that assigned Area Offices submit their quarterly reports latest last week of the month after quarter end
- Carry out audit of assigned process of any unit, division or department in BSN.
- Review BSN Bibles on PDF saved on central server and report quarterly to the Audit Manager.
- Submit detailed report on stocktaking monthly as assigned by the Audit Manager.
- Review requests for payments, cash advances, retirements and imprest reimbursements as may be assigned by the Audit Manager.
- Ensure the conclusion of Area audits as assigned and report to the Audit Manager.
- Ensure that other tasks assigned by the Audit Manager are completed in due course.
Personnel Specification(s)
- Good and practical knowledge of accounting software preferably QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions or Sage 50.
- Excellent analytical and numerical skills.
- Ability to lead others and to work under pressure.
- Sound knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
- Must possess a positive work ethic, a strong sense of accountability and confidentiality.
- Must be self-driven with ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be a practicing and committed Christian with turning point testimonies and experiences.
Manager – Management Account
Responsibilites
- Maintenance of stock items on the Sage 50 or QuickBooks Accounting Package
- Ensure monthly stock reconciliation pan-Nigeria
- Carry out accurate valuation of stock pan-Nigeria
- Ensure strategic product positioning pan-Nigeria
- Supervises payroll system & ensures that all statutory deductions/schedules are prepared monthly & are remitted to the relevant authorities timely.
- Maintains fixed assets schedules
- Annual budget preparation
- Filing of annual tax returns to relevant authorities.
Qualifications
- Must have minimum of 5 years cognate out of which 1 year must be at managerial level at least.
- Must be professionally certified by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN & CITN as Associate member at least). Must possess HND or BSc. in accounting or business administration. A master’s degree in either Business Administration, or related field would be an added advantage.
- Must possess excellent mathematical and computer skills; Analytical and logical problem-solving skills; excellent communication and presentation skills; good attention to details; Ability to present and explain financial information in a clear manner; Honesty and discretion; excellent leadership and social skills; and being a good team player.
- He must be result-driven; ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
- Ability to identify problem areas and offer solutions; versatility in Sage 50 or QuickBooks Accounting Package and Microsoft Package.
- Managing stress to generate information needed from time to time.
- Must have the following: A proven Christian experience and integrity; a high level of discipline and carefulness; willingness to learn and ability to work under pressure.
- Must be objective, forthright, not easily provoked, and proactive with excellent foresight in handling challenges before they occur.
Office Assistant
Purpose
- To ensure cleanliness of all toilets, reception, offices and the entire office environment, tables, chairs, and functionality of all the toilets in the office.
Job Description
- Proper cleaning of all assigned areas in the office.
- Proper recording of incoming and outgoing documents
- Receiving documentation of all incoming mails and dispatch to the appropriate office within the stipulated time.
- Provision of water in all the toilets for staff use.
- Receiving of visitors on behalf of the Organization when the receptionist is not available.
- Provision of drinking water (CWAY) in the office for staff use.

IT Support Assistant
Job Overview

Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with domain environments and common business applications.
- Basic knowledge of network security and administration.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified: Fundamentals).
