Airfares rise by 34.06% in one year – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said the average fare paid by air passengers for specific routes on a single journey has risen by 34.06% between May 2022 and May 2023.

In its Transport Fare Watch for May 2023, the NBS stated that the average airfare per passenger increased from N74,947.30 in April 2023 to N74,948.78 in May 2023.

The report also highlighted other transportation modes. The average fare for motorcycle transportation (Okada) in May 2023 was N464.55, representing a 0.49% increase from the rate recorded in April 2023 (N462.29). Comparing the figures to May 2022, there was an 11.30% rise from N417.39.

For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in May 2023 was N1,045.15, indicating a 1.39% increase from April 2023’s N1,030.83. In comparison to May 2022, this represented a 10.99% increase from N941.63.

The NBS Transport Fare Watch for May 2023 encompassed various modes of transportation, including bus journeys within the city on constant routes per drop, intercity bus journeys (state routes) per person, airfare for specified routes on single journeys, motorcycle (Okada) journeys per drop, and waterway passenger transport.
