The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nsukka Zone, has voiced its dissatisfaction with the one-year anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing unfulfilled promises as the reason for their lack of joy.
Zonal Coordinator, Raphael Amokaha, addressed journalists at Benue State University, Makurdi, expressing disappointment with successive administrations’ insensitivity in meeting the renegotiation terms of the 2009 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.
Amokaha highlighted various unmet agreements, including poor funding of universities, breach of autonomy, nonpayment of allowances, and withheld salaries.
While acknowledging Tinubu’s recent move to review university governing council appointments, ASUU cautioned against perceiving it as political patronage.
Despite Tinubu’s pledge to end strikes in Nigerian universities, Amokaha lamented, “Unfortunately, we are on the verge of a strike.”
Amokaha urged immediate action on the renegotiated agreement and payment of withheld salaries, emphasizing the impact of hyperinflation.
He also emphasized the importance of appointing experienced individuals to university councils, cautioning against viewing such appointments as political favors.
