After a passenger on a flight from Moscow to Simferopol caused a rampage by assaulting his fellow passengers and crew, the plane was forced to return. The rowdy passenger was injured during the rampage and died on the way to the hospital.

This event happened on a Red Wings flight shortly after it departed Moscow’s Domodedovo airport for Simferopol on Thursday. Eyewitnesses state that one of the passengers “went mad” and caused a lot of trouble on board.

The trouble maker was identified by passengers as a man in his early thirties. The uproar started when this man started to badmouth members of the crew, claiming the pilots had fallen asleep. He repeatedly shouted that Everyone “will die”. He also went on to attempt strangling a female passenger and beat up another passenger with a phone.

All of this escalated into a brawl and he was eventually subdued and tied to his seat. These events happened within 20 minutes of takeoff. At this point, the crew decided that it was best if the plan returned to Moscow.

The events took an unattractive turn as the trouble maker was severely injured during the brawl. He was rushed to the hospital. But he sadly died before he got there.

Plateau state has approved a new tourism policy for the state, in line with the determination of its administration to develop its tourism potentials.

This action came following a draft that was submitted by the Commissioner of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Hospitality in Plateau State, Mrs. Tamwakat Weli.

The draft was finally approved by the state executive council chaired by the state governor, Simon Lalong during its recent meeting. The Governor tasked the commissioner to “change the phase of tourism in the state by coming out with the necessary policy and guidelines for the development of tourism in the state”.

Mrs Weli, in reaction to the new development, expressed appreciation to the state governor for the approval, while commending every stakeholder in the creation of the draft.

“Your unflinching support towards achieving this dream for our beloved state is highly appreciated and commendable”. The Draft Tourism Policy was necessary to enable speedy growth and development of our numerous tourism endowments and potentials for the socio-economic development of our dear Plateau state”.

As a result of this new policy, the State of Tourism and Peace may be well back on its way to living up to its alias. However, the speed at which this would come int realization would depend on how far the government is willing to muster support and funding for this new policy to become a success.

The tourism industry in Pakistan gains a huge boost as British Airways plan to resume their services there. The tourism industry in Pakistan is a fast-growing industry. Last year, Pakistan was ranked as that world’s top adventure travel destination by the British Backpacker Society. It described the nation as, “one of the friendliest countries on the earth, with mountain scenery that is beyond anyone’s wildest imagination”.

Flights from London to Pakistan through British Airways would resume next week. 10 years ago, the U.K airline suspended its operations in the country after the 2008 Marriot Hotel bombing in the nation’s capital, Islamabad. The bombings took place during a period of distressing militant violence in Pakistan.

However, security in Pakistan has improved and the Muslim country with a population of about 208 people is rapidly being revived as a perfect destination for tourists and investors.

British Airways in a statement said, “the final touches are coming together for the airline’s return ahead of the first flight on Sunday (June 2)” It will launch a three-per-week service to Heathrow Airport in London.

British Airways will begin the London Heathrow-Islamabad service with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Presently Pakistan International Airlines is the only airline that flies directly from Pakistan to Britain. However, Middle Eastern airlines like Ethiad Airways, Emirates and Turkish Airlines have a strong presence in Pakistan.

The post Danger looms as US tourism numbers drop. first appeared on InsideOjodu.]]>
The number of overseas visitors in the United States is gradually reducing, as tit it a 5.4% drop in March compared to what it was last year.
This represents the worst showing since 2015. This makes country tourism chiefs fear that the US may lose out to rival destinations this year
According to figures released by the US Travel Association Tourism also fell in February, albeit by a more modest 0.2 per cent.
These figures are a cause for concern in an industry that is facing labor shortages because of the increasing difficulties in bringing in seasonal workers from overseas consequent of the Trump’s administration’s tougher line on visas.
“The outlook for international inbound travel remains lackluster, suggesting that a further loss of global market share is in the cards for the US in 2019,” said David Huether, Senior Vice President for Research at US Travel, the industry trade association.

The tourism industry is very vital to the US economy, as it represents about 11 per cent of the country’s total trade surplus of $77.4 billion.
In 2018, international tourism generated $197 billion for the US economy.
During the Obama administration, the economic importance of tourism was recognized, as the Travel Promotion Act was passed to boost the industry.

There was heavy investment in technology in order to cut airport immigration delays. The Brand USA was established to spearhead a global tourism campaign.

However, tourism slumped in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election as visitors were put off by the rhetoric coming from the White House and the uproar surrounding the attempt to ban people from several Muslim majority countries.

Though the controversy has lessened in intensity, official figures suggest that US immigration officials are continuing to take a tougher line than before.

Statistics produced by Customs and Border Protection show that just over 279,036 people were denied entry into the US at ports of entry in 2018 and 216,370 in 2017. However, so far this year 163,377 have been turned away.

There are other reasons behind the disappointing numbers, as the strength of the dollar has made the holidays more expensive

In a report commissioned by the industry, Oxford Economics warned that this represents “a headwind for international inbound travel.”
“Soft global economic activity, persistent trade tensions and uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration remain major risks to international traveler sentiment,” it added.

“The US share of the international long-haul market has been falling from a peak of 19.2 per cent in 2015 to 16.8 per cent last year.”

The trade war between Beijing and Washington and concerns in Europe over the Brexit negotiations which saw a double-digit slump in Chinese tourism to the US – are some other factors driving tourism down.

The industry’s difficulties have been aggravated by problems finding staff to work in hotels and restaurants.

With the economy booming, there are not enough Americans available to fill the vacancies, leaving the tourism industry to rely on seasonal workers who are allowed into the country on the H-2B visa program.

The fatal bombings that hit Sri Lanka during Easter have caused visitors to stay away from the country.
Early this year, the Lonely Planet travel guide named Sri Lanka as its top nation for travelers. The island nation is known for its beautiful beaches, ancient ruins, wildlife and parks.
However, On April 21, over 250 people were killed in a series of bomb attacks at hotels and churches. About 45 foreigners which including visitors from China, India, the United States and Britain were killed during the attacks. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the blasts.

Since April, foreign tourism has dropped sharply.
Travel officials stated that many tourists who planned to visit the country over the next few months canceled their plans. Visitor arrivals to Sri Lanka have dropped about 80 per cent since the April bombings.

The tourism industry contributes about 4.9 percent of Sri Lanka’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Last year, over 2 million tourists visited the island, bringing in about $4.4 billion.
According to Industry experts, hotel occupancy rates across the island has fallen by about 85 percent.
For the most part, beaches, eateries and stores in popular tourist areas are now empty.
Hikkaduwa is one of the most popular beaches in the southwest coast of the island nation. The area loved by tourists because of its good surfing conditions and clear waters for snorkeling. The Associated Press reported that on a recent day, only a few of the areas 27 hotels were even open. Most eateries that sit along the six-kilometer beach were closed.
The Hikkaduwa Beach Hotel was one of the few places still open. On the day of the bombings, all 50 of its rooms were full. Now, few people are staying there.
“It’s a real disaster. We don’t know what to do right now,” said Sanjeewani Yogarajah, who works at the hotel. She said the attack has so far cost the business about $31,000. The low earnings has forced the hotel to send half of its workers home.

Lankesha Ponnamperuma, who runs the hotel company Hikka Tranz, is one of the luckier business owners. He says that athough foreign visitors are mainly staying away, his business still survives because many local people are using the hotels. He said that Most days, up to two-thirds of the companys hotels are filled

The president of Sri Lankas Hotels Association, Sanath Ukwatta, said hotels have been advertising rates 30 to 50 percent lower in a bid to get Sri Lankans to come. He admits such offers will not fully solve the economic problems, however they can still “help at least to keep the hotels going.”

Hotel worker Sanjeewani Yogarajah says one of the biggest concerns for industry officials is a travel ban issued for Sri Lanka by several countries after the attacks.
“The ban is our main worry. Until it is removed or softened, we can’t start our marketing to attract tourists,” he said. “If it is lifted soon, we are hopeful we can bounce back this year, or otherwise definitely next year.”
