Barcelona very close to La Liga title after victory against Alaves

by James Ma

Barcelona has comfortably moved within touching distance of the La Liga title after victory at Alaves.

Carles Alena, 21, of Barcelona on the scoreboard with a close-range finish following a sweeping attack by the Catalan Giants. This came right after a goalless first half game.

Uruguay’s Luis Suarez converted a penalty soon, as Barcelona was awarded a penalty following a VAR handball review.

Victory against Alaves clearly means that Barcelona will be crowned as champions on Wednesday if Atletico Madrid is defeated by Valencia.

Barcelona, the reigning champions are 12 points clear of Atletico Madrid, who have just five games remaining.

While Atletico could also possibly still finish level on points with their title rivals, Barcelona, even if they lose on Wednesday, Barcelona will win the title by virtue of a better head-to-head record between the two sides.

The result means that Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde rests players for Levant clash at the weekend before next week’s CL semi-final against Liverpool.

Valverde perhaps already had one eye on the first leg against Jurgen Klopp’s side on Wednesday by opting to start Lionel Messi on the bench at Alaves.

The Argentina forward came on just after an hour and went closest to scoring his 34th league goal of the season with a powerful strike from a tight angle that was tipped over by Alaves goalkeeper Pacheco.
