Barcelona wins Manchester United

Barcelona defeated Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-final tie by one goal to nil as Suarez’s header was deflected in by Luke Shaw resulting in an own-goal.

This makes it the 33rd shot Luis Suarez has had without finding the net – that’s more than other players in the Champions League this season.

Manchester United must come up with another very unlikely Champions League comeback to keep their title chase alive after Barcelona left Old Trafford with a deserved advantage following the quarter-final first leg.

Barcelona, with Lionel Messi quiet by his standards, were far from their very best form but stole the victory after Luis Suarez’s far post header from Lionel Messi’s pass deflected into the net off Luke Shaw in the 12th minute. And after being initially given an offside, the video assistant confirmed the goal as celebrations erupted from the Barcelona fans.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the new Manchester United manager can take heart from his team’s great try but opportunities were at a premium, the best being a first-half header from Diogo Dalot that he directed off target. In fact, Manchester United did not record a single shot on target.

Barcelona posed a huge threat, with David de Gea saving shots coming from Philippe Coutinho and Lionel Messi – and Manchester United must now repeat their last-16 magic against Paris St-Germain – which is just impossible judging how lucky they were against PSG – in France when they travel to the Catalan giant’s chasing a semi-final spot against Liverpool or Porto.

Manchester United’s players got the applause of the Old Trafford crowd – but it was rather an acknowledgement of a plucky effort than praise for any serious quality.

This makes it Barcelona’s fourth Champions League win against Manchester United, with each win coming in a different stadium. Nou Camp, Stadio Olimpico, Wembley and finally, Old Trafford.
