BREAKING NEWS: ASSU Call-Off National Strike, Resumes Today

Following the meeting held at Abuja yesterday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has called off its three months old nationwide strike action.

This decision was made after the tenth meeting between the FG and ASUU since the commencement of the strike in November 2018, directing varsity lecturers to resume duty from Friday, February 8.

A 7-point memorandum of action was signed between ASSU President, Abiodun Ogunyemi and the Labour Minister, Chris Ngige that led to the suspension of this strike.

However, Ngige explained that FG had resolved the eight contentious issues that led to the strike, adding that N25 Billion Naira will be funded for the revitalization of public universities.

He further explained that visitation panels have been set up and will commence work on March 2.

While commenting on the suspension Ogunyemi  said, ” ASUU is strongly convinced that if academics fail to fight the cause of university education, the fate that befell public primary and secondary schools would soon become the lot of the public university system in Nigeria. ”

He said the strike action has proven to yield a positive result that is best known to the government.
