Brexit: Attorney General Geoffrey Cox: “Once we are out, we are out”

In order to honour the referendum result, Geoffrey Cox, who has provided the government and MPs with legal advice on Brexit says that “This is an article of faith, that the UK must leave the EU”.

Although the attorney general found undesirable the customs unions as the only way of leaving the EU., He said that he would take it.

For a “swift exit,” he added, he suggested that the only option for the government was to seek some common ground with Labour and also suggested that the UK could not permanently be bound into a customs arrangement.

“If we decided, in some considerable years time that we wanted to review our membership of any such customs union if we signed it – and I’m not saying we will – that’s a matter for negotiation and discussion.
There’s nothing to stop us removing ourselves from that arrangement, so we can’t look at these things as permanent straitjackets upon this country.

I am completely convinced the UK has to leave the EU.

We promised this country that we would do so, we promised it that we would honour the outcome of the referendum.
The referendum said we must leave and we must,” Attorney General Geoffrey Cox said in an interview with Laura Kuenssberg, the BBC’s political editor.

He also added that “The remorseless logic of numbers [in the House of commons]… means that the only way, unless the prime minister’s deal is to be voted through, is to seek with Labour some common ground, so that we can affect a swift exit.”

This comes as a result of criticism of Theresa May from her own party over talks with Jeremy Corbyn, Labour leader.

“All MPs have a responsibility to deliver Brexit,” Prime Minister Theresa May’s response to the criticisms.
