The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and United States Assistant Secretary for Energy and Natural Resources, Geoffrey Pyatt, have agreed to set up a team of officials from both countries to explore financing for credit to mining firms and infrastructures.

On the sidelines of the Mines and Money Conference held in London, Pyatt said his visit to Alake followed an earlier meeting with President Bola Tinubu who sought the support of the US for the country’s economic revival.

He said the US would like to be Nigeria’s partner of choice in developing the solid minerals sector and was interested in the reforms announced by the minister during the conference.

Noting that the US has various institutions and laws which encourage direct foreign investment, Pyatt said he would notify the agencies to collaborate with their Nigerian counterparts to work out the framework.

Responding, Alake said the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development had launched a seven-point agenda as its roadmap to reposition the sector.

He highlighted the establishment of the new Solid Minerals Development Company, a new security architecture to ensure safety of mine operations and data generation on a massive scale to de-risk the sector.

The minister added that “the credit facility and foreign direct investment promised by the US would be in the mutual interest of both countries because energy minerals such as lithium are critical to the global crusade for clean energy and necessary for the manufacture of electric cars.”

Also speaking at the meeting, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Solid Minerals Fund, Fatima Shinkafi, commended the US for investment in mining infrastructure in Central Africa, urging a similar partnership with the Fund.

The United States government has authorised the evacuation of its government employees and their families from Nigeria over potential terrorist attacks..

The US State Department announced the approval of the evacuation in its updated Nigeria travel advisory on Tuesday evening.

The United States and United Kingdom had on Sunday warned of a possible terrorist attack in the capital Abuja, especially aimed at government buildings, places of worship and schools, among other targets.

On October 25, 2022, the Department authorized the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and family members due to the heightened risk of terrorist attacks,” the advisory read.

“The U.S. Embassy Abuja continues to have limited ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Nigeria. The U.S. Consulate in Lagos is providing all routine and emergency services to U.S. citizens in Nigeria.”

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Information had dismissed the security alert, stating that Nigerians are safer now, stating that the Nigerian Armed Forces were on top of security challenges in the country.

Our country is safer today than at any time in recent times, thanks to the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.

“We do not discountenance the fact that terrorists, bandits and their kind would always want to do whatever it takes to disrupt our nation’s peace, security and stability. But our security forces have been proactive.”

Nigeria’s Department of State Services said the United States had previously issued similar warnings and urged citizens to remain alert.

The nation’s capital city came under heavy attack months ago following the Boko Haram raid on Kuje Prison and an attack on the Presidential Guards Brigade at Bwari in which three elite officers were killed.

Schools in Abuja were also shutdown over security concerns during the period.

The Nigeria Police Force was yet to react to the report of the authorisation of the exodus of US government workers and citizens from the country.

Calls by our correspondent to the force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday were unanswered and WhatsApp and text messages were yet to be returned.

However, in a statement on Monday, Adejobi disclosed that the Force would review the US and UK security advisories while strengthening security structures across the country for proactiveness.

He also noted that a review of the advisory was necessary, adding that the police, as the lead agency in internal security, would not take any threat intelligence, either actionable or not, for granted.

In a statement, he said, “The Nigeria Police Force hereby reassures Nigerians and all other residents and visitors in the country that it will effectively review the United States of America Embassy in Abuja’s security advisory which was issued, widely circulated, and published by the media on October 23, 2022, indicating an elevated risk of terror attacks in the country, particularly in the capital city of Abuja.”

Assuring the nation of the police plan to secure the nation, the Force Headquarters said more deployments will be made to enhance national security.

“As part of its security strategy, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered all 36 states Commissioners of Police, including that of the FCT, and the head of police tactical squads, to re-strategise the security management within their jurisdictions.

“He also has announced a counter-terrorism incident simulation exercise which will take place in the nation’s capital, tagged, “Operation Darkin Gaggawa.”

Emirates Airlines has announced the suspension of its flight operations to Nigeria, starting September 1, 2022.

The flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, August 18, citing the inability to repatriate its earnings in foreign exchange from Nigeria.

At least $600 million of over 20 foreign airlines has been blocked in Nigeria since the beginning of the year.

Emirates had said two weeks ago that out of these funds, it had about $85 million in Nigeria.

Emirates had asked Hadi Sirika, Nigeria’s minister of aviation, to support the repatriation of its revenue, amounting to $85 million.

On Monday, August 15, the airline had cut its 11 weekly frequencies into Lagos Airport to just 7.

Now, it has announced that all flights to Nigeria will be suspended from September 1.

The airline said the suspension would “limit further losses and reduce the impact on its operational costs that continue to accumulate in the Nigerian market”.

Emirates Airlines said in a statement: “Therefore, Emirates has taken the difficult decision to suspend all flights to and from Nigeria, effective 1 September 2022, to limit further losses and impact on our operational costs that continue to accumulate in the market.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our customers, however, the circumstances are beyond our control at this stage. We will be working to help impacted customers make alternative travel arrangements wherever possible. Should there be any positive developments in the coming days regarding Emirates’ blocked funds in Nigeria, we remain keen to serve Nigeria, and our operations provide much-needed connectivity for Nigerian travellers, providing access to trade and tourism opportunities to Dubai, and to our broader network of over 130 destinations.”

Mozambique’s Ministry of Education has withdrawn a set of Grade Seven textbook containing some controversial topics on sexuality from its curriculum.

The natural sciences book addresses subjects such as masturbation and sexual orientation, and has been in use since 2004. It has now been withdrawn from schools following controversies surrounding the topics.

Opposition from some parents who pointed out that it is a taboo in some communities to teach children about sex, also influenced the decision to withdraw the book.

Some parents also believed that sex education to Grade 7 pupils who are barely 13 years old may promote premature marriages and early pregnancies.

The ministry said that they will replace the book next year but in the meantime, it urged teachers to avoid the controversial topics.

Ismael Nheze, the Director of the National Institute of Education Development said; “We talked to the publisher to remove that page (that contains sexuality topics)”

Saudi Arabia will allow around 1,000 pilgrims to perform Hajj this year, a minister said Tuesday, June 23. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was announced that this year’s Hajj would be scaled back. Only one thousand pilgrims residing in the kingdom will be allowed to partake in the ceremony this year.

Hajj Minister Mohammad Benten said “The number of pilgrims will be around 1,000, maybe less, maybe a little more. The number won’t be in tens or hundreds of thousands” this year”

Health Minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah said “The pilgrimage, scheduled for the end of July, will be limited to those below 65 years of age and with no chronic illnesses. The pilgrims will be tested for coronavirus before arriving in the holy city of Mecca and will be required to quarantine at home after the ritual”

Saudi Arabia announced on Monday it would hold a “very limited” hajj this year. It said the ritual will be open to people of various nationalities already in the kingdom.

This is the first time in Saudi Arabia’s modern history that Muslims outside the kingdom have been barred from performing the hajj.
