COVID-19: Young people are the ones driving transmission of the pandemic — NCDC Boss

The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu has said the increase is the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic can be traced to young people.

According to a series of tweets by the COVID-19 Presidential Task Force, it said Ihekweazu noted at its daily briefing on Thursday that Younger people, aged 20 to 40, are the ones driving transmission of the Coronavirus.

The tweet added that those bearing the brunt are 50 and above. 3 out of 5 of all who die from Covid-19 are 50 and above.

The NCDC alsoon its Twitter page on the daily briefing update said, “Statistics show the major drivers of #COVID19 spread are the younger populations, however people with underlying medical conditions & the elderly are most vulnerable. We must #TakeResponsibility to keep them safe.”

“We need new thinking around #HealthSecurity which includes equitable access to resources needed for the #COVID19 response.”

Meanwhile, National Coordinator, PTF COVID-19 said a lot of the labs are underutilized; their capacity far exceeds what they’re getting in terms of samples for testing.

He added that every State has an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for Covid-19, noting most States have hotlines, that citizens can call to report symptoms and to get advice on how to can be tested.
