Delete dead voters from register, Reps tell INEC

The House of Representatives has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to develop a system to delete dead voters from the voter register.

Following a member’s motion of urgent national importance calling attention to what he described as irregularities seen during the general elections of 2023, the House adopted this resolution.

The motion’s sponsor, Abejide, claimed that the INEC register had his deceased father’s name.

Additionally, the lawmakers urged the electoral commission to deregister any voter who fails to cast a ballot for two general elections.

Prior to this, the House had instructed the National Assembly clerk to send President Muhammadu Buhari the proposed constitutional amendment bill setting forth a uniform retirement age for judges and pension rights.

The decision of the House followed the passage of the bill by the Sokoto State House of Assembly, thereby meeting the provisions of Section 9(2) of the constitution for two-thirds approval of state assemblies.

The Reps further urged the Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kwara, Plateau and Taraba State Houses of Assembly that are yet to forward their resolution on the bill to do so.

The constitutional bill, if assented to by the President, will extend the retirement age of high court judges from 65 to 70 years.
