Democracy Day: CDD urges Nigerians to uphold democratic ideals

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has issued a call for Nigerians, government institutions, and civil society organizations to reaffirm their dedication to upholding democratic principles.

In a statement released on Monday, Idayat Hassan, the Director of CDD, emphasized the need to bolster democratic institutions and cultivate an atmosphere that respects and values the voices of citizens.

Hassan stated, “June 12 serves as a reminder of our unwavering commitment to the democratic values and principles that serve as the bedrock of our nation. It symbolizes the Nigerian people’s aspirations for a just, inclusive, and accountable society. It also prompts us to acknowledge the progress Nigeria has made as a nation in ensuring the continuity of a government that is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people. The 2023 election cycle exemplifies the maturation of Nigeria’s democracy.”

“As the nation commemorates this significant day, we urge all Nigerians, government institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector to not only reaffirm their dedication to democratic ideals, but also to actively work towards strengthening democratic institutions, promoting accountability, safeguarding human rights, and creating an environment where every citizen’s voice is acknowledged and respected.”
