FG approves new trade union, Online Transport Workers

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria has received authorization from the federal government in the form of a letter (AUATWON).

The presentation was made on Tuesday in Abuja by Chris Ngige, minister of labor and employment.

The new union includes all app-based transportation employees, online transportation providers, including drivers and operators of e-hailing services.

Ngige stated that the registration marked a significant turning point in labor administration, especially in the area of trade union services.

The minister noted that the informal sector, which employs the vast majority of employees, is being formalized globally.

“Today, we are breaking new ground with those who are employing themselves and from there, employing others”, he said.

AUTWON applied for registration on April 27, 2021 to cater for self-employed persons in the field of IT-based transportation services.
