The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has issued a stern warning to miners in the country, urging them to strictly adhere to proper licensing procedures before commencing operations.
The government is determined to take stringent actions against illegal miners, as emphasized during a meeting with licensed mineral holders, laterite, and sand operators in Kaduna State.
During the meeting held on Thursday, Dr. Dele Alake, represented by the acting Zonal Mines Officer, Mr. Kutman Ali, stressed the importance of obtaining a permit after securing a mining license.
He stated, “A permit to mobilize to the site is a letter that will introduce you to the state and local governments as well as communities through their traditional ruler, making mining activities smoother.”
The Minister urged operators in Kaduna State to promptly clear their outstanding debts. Alake revealed that miners and operators across the country collectively owed the Federal Government over N2 trillion, with Kaduna State alone accumulating a debt exceeding N300 billion.
Highlighting the government’s plans for the mining sector in 2024 and beyond, Alake emphasized the revitalization of the Special Mines Surveillance Taskforce (SMSTF).
This initiative aims to combat illegal mining and ensure the timely payment of royalties and taxes.
The meeting served as a platform to communicate the Minister’s vision and reinforce the commitment to enforcing regulations in the mining industry.
