FG unveils plan to tackle open defecation in Nigeria

The Federal Government has introduced a comprehensive plan, revealed during an event marking World Toilet Day 2023 in Abuja, themed ‘Accelerating Change.’

During the presentation, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, underscored the importance of stakeholder ownership and collaboration in tackling the challenge.

Emphasizing the urgency to implement initiatives promoting a healthier and cleaner environment, Utsev outlined the ministry’s commitment to maximizing the social and economic benefits of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

The minister discussed the creation of a national WASH policy and a specific sanitation marketing strategy, aiming to advance the supply side of the sanitation industry.

To attract investments, Utsev revealed plans to identify bankable sanitation projects with diverse returns and to continue efforts to develop innovative financial mechanisms, thereby reducing the risks associated with private investment in the sanitation subsector.

Highlighting the impact of poor sanitation practices on Nigeria’s economy, Utsev referred to a 2012 World Bank study estimating an annual cost of N455 billion.

He stressed the crucial public health aspect of improved access to sanitary services, noting the social consequences, including diminished privacy, dignity, and increased vulnerability to physical assault and violence, particularly affecting women and girls.

The minister emphasized that the comprehensive approach not only addresses economic ramifications but also underscores the broader social and public health imperative for a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Nigeria.
