According to eyewitnesses, the outbreak occurred around 9:30 pm, flaming off the rooftop of a food seller popularly known as Iya Yusuf.

It was gathered the fire could have erupted as a result of careless abandonment of burning coal by the food vendor.

Watchmen of the business community, who saw the fire, made initial efforts to put the fire out before residents came to their aid.

Eyewitnesses accused the fire service of late response to the emergency call, which eventually led to the widespread of raging fire.

However, the Lagos State Fire Service operatives were able to put out the fire at about 11:30 pm.
