Gov Otu calls for strengthening democracy as Nigeria marks June 12 anniversary

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has called on all citizens and stakeholders in Nigeria to support the flourishing of democracy.

He also emphasized the role of democracy in development and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.

Speaking through his Deputy, Peter Odey, at an event marking the upcoming 25th anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections—won by the late Chief MKO Abiola but annulled by then-military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida—Otu highlighted the significance of the election in fueling Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

The governor paid tribute to democratic heroes like Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola for their contributions.

He celebrated 25 years of continuous democracy, noting the valuable lessons and blessings it has brought to Cross River State.

Otu expressed gratitude for the patriotic leaders who have guided both the state and the nation and reassured the people that his administration prioritizes their welfare.
