Job Purpose:
To align HR strategies with the overall business objectives for the Matrix Shipping Business unit.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develop and implement HR strategies aligned with the shipping department’s goals.
- Collaborate with shipping managers to understand their workforce needs and provide HR support.
- Plan and execute periodic crew change activities, adhering to the stipulations outlined in the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) for regulatory compliance.
- Advise and guide shipping leadership on HR policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Manage end to end recruitment and onboarding processes for shipping personnel.
- Conduct regular employee engagement surveys and address concerns within the shipping department.
- Coordinate performance management processes, including KPI setting, evaluations, and development plans.
- Ensure compliance with labour laws, regulations, and industry standards within the shipping unit.
- Collaborate with organization Development to provide relevant training programs for shipping staff.
- Handle employee relations issues, investigations, and conflict resolution within the shipping team.
- Prepare the monthly payroll schedule for all crew members.
- Conduct periodic visits to ships to personally assess and ensure the well-being of the crew members.
- Interface with maritime regulatory bodies to secure necessary licenses and validate the certifications of seafarers, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Regularly review and optimize procedures, policies, and contracts within the HR and crewing functions to align with industry best practices and current operational dynamics.
- Coordinate with insurance providers, including P&I and local insurance companies, in the event of accidents involving seafarers.
- Prepare for and attend internal and external audits as well as management review meetings.
- Any other responsibilities assigned by the line manager.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Transport, or any related field with a minimum of second class upper grade.
- HR professional certification (CIPM, SHRM-CP, PHRi/SPHRi).
- A Masters’ degree will be an advantage.
- 5- 6 years’ experience in an HR role in the Maritime industries.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Knowledge of the Maritime industry and its applicable regulatory requirements such as MLC, STCW 2010, ISM, etc.
- Knowledge of expatriate hiring strategies.
- Knowledge of vessel crewing and its requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of HR best practices.
- Ability to work in a multicultural team environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of change management and stakeholder management.
- Excellent listening, interviewing and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office tools especially Excel.
