I’ll be far from Abuja after office – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, said he has only one house in Daura to retire to after his tenure elapses in May 2023.

“I haven’t built an extra house in Daura. Those who know me know that I have one house and that is where I will retire to,” Buhari said when he hosted a delegation of Abuja residents led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,  Mohammed Bello, at the State House, Abuja.

The President also said after leaving office, he will retire to his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, far away from the epicentre of the 2023 political activities.

“I have promised a lot of my colleagues that I will try and be as far away as possible from Abuja when I leave office, so that nobody can create any problem for me anymore.

“I will be in Daura, which is on the border with Niger Republic and I think in spite of technology, I will be safe enough there,” Buhari said.

In his address earlier, the FCT minister, Mohammed Bello, thanked the President for opening his doors to his neighbours for one last time.

While noting that the Christmas visit will be the last in the Buhari regime, Bello expressed delight that the meeting held after it was halted for two years, 2020 and 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said, “It is not surprising to pay such visits because constitutionally, as the Governor General of the FCT, you are also the head of the administration of the FCT but you have graciously delegated that to me.

“Today marks a milestone for us because in 2020 and 2021 we could not pay such visits due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This also presents the last Christmas that we are going to have an opportunity as residents of the FCT to come and pay you homage because in five months’ time, your tenure would have ended and the next Christmas will be under a new President.

“I wish to also on behalf of the entire residents of the FCT, wish you well and pray for God almighty to grant you long life, useful and healthy retirement in the next few months.”

Speaking on behalf of the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, the CAN Vice President and President of the Evangelical Church Wining All, Stephen Panya-Baba, said Christian community is in “full support” of Buhari’s efforts to lead Nigerians out of poverty.
