Inflation: Nigerians can no longer endure suffering – CAN tells FG

Expressing deep concern over the dire economic situation and rising security challenges, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Abuja has called for urgent government intervention.

In a statement released by its Secretary-General, Elder Sunday Oibe, the organization highlighted the unbearable suffering faced by ordinary Nigerians due to the exorbitant cost of living, exacerbated by the soaring prices of essential commodities and services.

The statement condemned the escalating insecurity across the nation, particularly lamenting the rampant killings and kidnappings for ransom, which have added to the plight of citizens.

CAN urged the Federal Government to take immediate steps to address both the economic crisis and security threats, emphasizing the need for justice to be served by apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators and sponsors of these heinous crimes.

The association called on all levels of government to provide adequate support to security agencies in their efforts to combat criminal activities effectively.

Additionally, CAN implored Nigerians to cooperate with security personnel and to offer prayers for their success in confronting the nation’s enemies.

Furthermore, the statement criticized regional groups, including the Arewa Consultative Forum and the Northern Elders Forum, for opposing government plans to relocate certain departments from Abuja to Lagos. CAN deemed such opposition as unnecessarily divisive and urged for a focus on policies aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and reducing costs.

Echoing similar concerns, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar, urged government intervention in addressing the economic hardship that has triggered protests nationwide.

The recent protests in Minna, Kano, Ondo, and elsewhere underscore the urgency of the situation, as citizens express frustration over the rising cost of living.

In Niger State, protesters, predominantly women, demanded action from the government to alleviate the prevailing hunger, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Despite attempts by security forces to quell the protests, the underlying grievances remain unresolved, underscoring the pressing need for meaningful government intervention to address the economic challenges gripping the nation.
