Kidnapping: Tinubu approves emergency procurement for tracking equipment – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved the emergency procurement of digital tracking tools to curb the activities of kidnappers.

During a media interface in Abuja on Monday, Wike emphasized that while he wouldn’t delve into specifics, recent informants arrested by security agencies in the territory are cooperating and providing actionable intelligence.

Wike noted that information obtained from the suspects has led to the apprehension of kidnappers, as evidenced by the police parade over the weekend.

He assured the public that security agencies are actively thwarting potential attacks, dispelling concerns about the government’s vigilance.

Addressing past challenges due to inadequate equipment, Wike stated that with the president’s approval for emergency procurement, there would be a significant improvement in addressing security issues.

He highlighted the importance of specific tracking tools that can pinpoint the exact location of criminal activities, citing his experience as the former Governor of Rivers state.

The minister underscored the need for motivation and equipment for security personnel while maintaining discretion about specific strategies. He emphasized that the emergency procurement approval by the president is crucial for swift and effective response measures.

Wike disclosed plans to establish a Joint Task Force under the FCT Administration, equipped with a full command and control structure to respond to security emergencies.

Despite the potential cost and time involved, he stressed the importance of addressing the identified gaps in security.

Regarding informants, Wike acknowledged the arrests made by security agencies and assured the public that steps have been taken to safeguard lives and property, urging citizens not to panic.
