The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, has responded to circulating claims that the current demolition initiative led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is unfairly targeting individuals from the South-Easterners.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, Olumide clarified that the demolished structures lacked approval from any of the state’s agencies.
Notably, these buildings were swiftly erected during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
Despite social media speculation, the commissioner asserted that property ownership in Lagos is open to everyone who adheres to established rules.
He highlighted the unfortunate association of recent events with individuals from specific parts of the country.
Olumide explained that the uproar surrounds structures hastily constructed during the COVID-19 period when enforcement activities faced limitations due to movement restrictions.
He challenged owners of demolished buildings to present their building approvals, emphasizing that legally approved structures will not face demolition.
Furthermore, the commissioner stressed that structures violating the law, particularly those encroaching on drainage systems, will be subject to demolition.
The ongoing enforcement aims to address buildings that do not comply with legal requirements, ensuring a safer and more regulated urban environment.
