Lagos govt partners with UNICEF to launch Nigeria learning passport

The Lagos State Government in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday launched the Nigeria Learning Passport, a digital learning platform.

The State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo speaking at the launch in Ikeja, Lagos, said the initiative will enhance socio-economic growth and also serve as an intervention to bridge the knowledge gap using technology to enrich creativity.

Adefisayo also reaffirmed that the present administration will continue to foster essential partnerships to upscale the implementation of the third pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda, Education and Technology, to ultimately prepare a world-class multi-skilled workforce for global recognition.

The Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Nigeria, Celine Lafoucriere stated that the launch was centered on the vision to increase global access, saying “At UNICEF, we remain resolute to achieving the sustainable development goal on education by complementing the federating states to accelerate education reforms.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji informed the gathering that the State Government has been utilising different informal platforms to engage Students, following the global realities that learning is not confined to the four walls of a classroom.

Abayomi said: “We commend the sterling contributions of our frontline partner, UNICEF, in ensuring that learning continues even when children are not within the school structure”.
The well-attended launch had in attendance top management of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Heads of its various Agencies, Stakeholders from the private sector and student representatives.

The Nigeria Learning Passport is another solution initiative geared toward closing the learning gap with a focus on equitable, quality and flexible learning. It enables access to education for children, youth and teachers through the use of portable digital devices.
