Lagos Govt Re-Affirms Commitment to Protection of Consumer Rights

Lagos State Government on Thursday joined the rest of the world in the observance of the year 2019 World Consumer Rights Day with a renewed commitment to entrenching the rights of consumers and manufacturers of smart products.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye during a press briefing to mark the world consumer Day on the theme” trusted smart products” said it was time for the state to develop the frameworks for the protection of consumers as the Consumer Rights Day is a global celebration of consumer rights and solidarity within the international community so that to ensure that consumer rights can be protected.

Officials of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) according to Oladinjoye would not relent in sensitising the members of public on their rights as consumers so that they can enjoy the full benefit of smart products on first purchase.

The commissioner further stated that there are plans by the LASCOPA to sensitize traders and relevant stakeholders at the Ikeja computer village on the rights of the consumers so that they can he further respected to enhance customer satisfaction of smart products.

Oladunjoye was confident that with the proposed sensitization program, manufacturers of smart products will be further encouraged to include concepts such as safety, security, consumer affordability, convenience and data privacy, data protection while producing smart devices.

She added, ” We realise that owing to the incorporation of smarter products into the lives of the people, issues such as lack of security, safety amongst others and lack of internet access due to high data charges have become worrisome to both consumers and stakeholders; however, the State Government will see to these issues,”

The commissioner advised consumers and stakeholders to abide by the provisions of the Consumer Protection Policy to avoid running foul of the laws.
