Lagos govt to partner private sector on affordable housing – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated the need for the government to partner with the private sector to ensure that residents have access to affordable accommodation.

The governor stated this on Wednesday during the inauguration of Lagos Building Investment Company apartments at Ogba-Ijaiye, Agege.

Sanwo-Olu, in his address, disclosed that his administration, in partnership with the private sector, has delivered more than 3,526 housing units across the state since 2019.

He said, “For us, this is not only about the availability of housing, but also about the affordability. We are concerned about ensuring that, not only are the houses reasonably priced but that there are also creative financing mechanisms that give people the capacity and convenience to pay based on their incomes.

“In our quest to provide decent, yet affordable accommodation to the people of Lagos State, we have, in partnership with the private sector, delivered more than 3,526 housing units across the state. Since we assumed office in 2019, we, as a government, have completed and commissioned no fewer than 15 housing estates across the state.

“Our ongoing land reforms are aimed at making it easier for these private players to deliver more affordable housing quickly that meets the needs of the population. Indeed, our view has always been that the most efficient way to address the housing challenges we face as a megacity, is for the government to enable and empower the private sector to deploy its abundant capital.”

The Managing Director, LBIC, Oluwatobiloba Lawal, said the inauguration of the Greater Lagos LBIC apartments is “a testament of Mr Governor’s commitment to the provision of affordable shelter that could stimulate the economic growth of the state hence, the THEMES agenda is working.”
