LASEMA Relief Camp to Accommodate 200 Homeless Victims of Collapsed and Demolished Buildings

Twelve days after the collapsed of three storey building on 63, Massey street opposite Ita Faji Market in Lagos Island and demolition of about 18 distressed buildings by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, within the axis, the Lagos State Government is set to relocate two hundred first set of homeless victims affected by the unfortunate incident to the Lagos Sate Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA resettlement and relief camp in Igando under Alimosho local government area.

Showcasing the facility which was formerly used as the NYSC Lagos camp but remodelled three years ago as LASEMA Relief Camp to journalists on Sunday during a tour ahead of its opening to receive the 200 internally displaced persons this week Thursday, the commissioner for information and strategy, Kehinde Bamgbetan said government is following international best practices in accommodating the IDPs for a minimum of three months at the camp so that they can fully recover from the trauma of their recent experiences before being reunited with members of the public.

He said provision has been made for the wellbeing of everyone in camp including three square meal per day and medical team that would attend to the health needs of the people while referral will be made to the Igando General Hospital during critical health challenges that may arise.

In his remarks, General Manager of LASEMA, Adeshina Tiamiyu also said the full complement of the medical team made up of doctors, nurses and pharmacist will arrive for duties from Monday, March 25th ahead of the opening of the relief camp on Thursday.

The APC LASEMA boss added that already, there are four security operatives guarding the facility but once open for the use of the IDPs, more will be gotten through collaboration with the Nigeria Police, LSNC and other sister security outfits while the LASEMA team headed by him will be on ground to prevent any breach of public peace, law and order in the camp.

He said although the distance of the camp may be considered as far for some of the victims but government will continue to do everything within its capacity to make the IDPs comfortable during their stay at the transit camp and provide palliative that will lead to their speedy reintegration into the society and businesses.

The facilities showed to journalists include 5hostel, 22 rooms for eight persons per room, kitchen, general hall for recreational purposes as well as a clinic with beds and other medical items ready for use.

The LASEMA Relief Camp comprises of five dormitories made up of 22 rooms with eight persons in each room, a kitchen, a 400- capacity hall which could also service as recreational centre, a three-ward clinic with eight beds, pharmaceutical store store and record rooms, staff quarters, a row of 10 toilets and bathrooms for each dormitories among others.

It would be recalled that this latest government social intervention follows the building collapse at Ita Faji in which about 10 persons were said to have been killed and another 45 injured while several others were rendered homeless while others lost properties in their shops worth millions of naira on March 13. Others that will be accommodated at the transit camp include those affected by subsequent demolition of about 18 distressed buildings in Lagos Island.
