LASG to impose N50,000 fine on motorists for over-speeding

Installs cameras at Alapere, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way to apprehend culprits
Lagos State Government, yesterday, said that motorists driving above 80km per hour along the Alapere section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, would risk a fine of N50,000.

It said that it had installed two traffic cameras along the roads to apprehend motorists for overspending.

The Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who disclosed this during a media briefing to announce the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) cameras on four strategic routes to enhance traffic management and improve commuting across the state, said that the ITS would integrate advanced information, communication, sensing, control, and computer technologies into its transportation management framework.

“This innovative system allows for real-time monitoring and management of traffic conditions, enabling precise, efficient, and comprehensive control of transportation activities,” he said.

He added that the deployment of four new ITS sites was designed to monitor and enforce road traffic laws.

“It is important to also note that the enforcement will commence immediately. Motorists who violate traffic laws as detected by the ITS will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) department, detailing the nature of the violation and the corresponding fines to be paid,” the commissioner said.

Osiyemi, however, maintained that the system was not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behaviour and reduce the rate of accidents on the roads.

He said that the goal is to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment.
