LASUBEB, LASPEMA Partner to Curb Insecurity on School Setbacks

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) is set to partner with the Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Agency (LASPEMA) to sanitise setbacks and incidental open spaces in Public Primary Schools towards the sustenance of a safe learning environment.

Speaking at a meeting held with the management of LASPEMA in his office at Maryland, Ikeja, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King, Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, commended the agency’s efforts in enforcing setbacks compliance in line with the State’s environmental plan and its commitment to the actualisation of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda.

He noted that the infractions on setbacks and incidental open spaces have become alarming, adding that the Board frowns at the illegal act, especially around schools in the State.

The Executive Chairman stated the enforcement exercises to dislodge illegal informal operators in the academic environment across the State would commence soon.
Noting that such activities will hinder teaching and learning in the academic environment, Alawiye-King emphasised that the misuse of setbacks in schools and indiscriminate construction of shanties on open spaces would no longer be tolerated by the Board.

In his remarks, the General Manager of LASPEMA, Tpl. Daisi Oso, stated that all forms of criminal activities take place on setbacks and incidental open spaces, constituting a constant threat to the well-being of pupils and teachers in the learning environment.

Oso hinted that the collaboration would evolve a model for landscaping and deploying creative paintings on walls around schools to improve the aesthetics and create a secure environment with the installation of closed circuit television on setbacks for surveillance purposes.

At the end of the strategic meeting, a five-man committee, comprising officials of LASPEMA and LASUBEB, was charged with developing a model to facilitate synergy with other relevant MDAs of the State Government.
