Learn vocational skills, commissioner advises unemployed youths

The Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs Yetunde Arobieke, has advised unemployed youths in the state to take advantage of vocational and technical job skills as alternatives to unavailable white-collar jobs.

Arobieke gave the advice, according to a statement on Thursday, during the 2022 Mindset Orientation Programme organised by the ministry in Lagos.

She said, “The state government conceived the idea when it became abundantly clear that many unemployed youths are fixated on getting white-collar jobs hence the need to change their mindset from being job seekers to wealth creators.

Unfortunately, these prestigious white-collar jobs are no longer available, hence the annual Mindset Orientation programme was meant to advocate and encourage youths to consider technical and vocational skills as an alternative to white-collar jobs, enhance the youth leadership and employability skills, and channel the passions and energies of unemployed youths in the state towards self-reliant skills.”

On her part, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olayinka Fashola, advised job seekers at the programme to leverage more on technology to enhance their job opportunities, adding that technology will put them at an advantage over those who were not technologically savvy.
