Minimum wage: Council of State and Labour congress, N27,000 not Accepted

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, revealed that N27,000 has been authorized by the National Council of State as the new National Minimum Wage.

This was disclosed at the Presidential Villa, Abuja after the council’s meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari who chaired the meeting.

The minister added that the new minimum wage of N27,000 bill would be transferred to the National Assembly in the less than 24 hours for passage into law.

However, Ngige, stated that the Federal Government had resolved to pay its workers N30,000 as the new national minimum while the State Governments are free to negotiate with their respective staff.

In a related development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said it would not accept the N27,000 new National Minimum Wage approved by the National Council of State.

The NLC General Secretary, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, said the council has no right whatsoever to readjust the amount after a Tripartite Committee has approved and submitted its report.

The NLC has however given ultimatum of Friday for the National Executive Council meeting to revert the changes made on the new Minimum Wage or it will resolve to National strike.
