The Peace Corps Bill which was harmonised and passed into law last week after the Conference Committee laid its report has been transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.
Sani Magaji Tambuwal, CNA, Clerk of the National Assembly, transmitted the bill on Wednesday in expectation of President Buhari’s approval before he leaves office on May 29, 2023.
The letter, dated April 12, 2023, and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighted pertinent portions of the Constitution and pleaded with him to sign the legislation.
Three copies of the authenticated bill were forwarded to the President for assent, one of which is expected to be retained by him and the other two, sent back to the National Assembly for further action.
President Buhari now has three days window and that is until May 11, to sign the bill
If the bill is signed into law, the status of Peace Corps would change from volunteerism into a full-fledged government-funded agency.
