Nigerian student sent to jail for assaulting wife in UK

John Nwadiaju, a Nigerian student living in the UK, was given an 11-month prison term for harassing and severely hitting his wife, Kosisochukwu Echem.

The punishment and 250 hours of unpaid labour were given to Nwadiaju, a student at Bangor University in North Wales, the United Kingdom, on Friday by the Caernarfon Crown Court.

According to the North Wales Chronicle, Nwadiaju and Echem were married in Nigeria in April 2022 but divorced in August 2022 due to domestic abuse and violence.

Echem traveled to see him in Bangor with the intention of making amends, but Nwadiaju is accused of abducting her passport and Personal Independence Payment card and abusing her repeatedly.

Police arrested him at the scene, and bloodstains were found on his person and property.

Despite claiming self-defence, Nwadiaju was found guilty, and Judge Nicola Saffman sentenced him to 11 months in prison, suspended for one year, and ordered him to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work.
