The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that the number of active mobile subscriptions in the country has reached 220,715,961 million as of August 2023.
This disclosure was made by Prof. Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of NCC, during the 18th Abuja International Trade Fair organized by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).
In addition to the mobile subscriptions, Prof. Danbatta mentioned that there are 159,034,717 million active internet subscribers in Nigeria, with broadband penetration at 45.57 percent as of August 2023.
He emphasized the importance of leveraging new technologies and digital skills to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses on an international scale.
The NCC’s regulatory efforts are aimed at deepening access to digital services, which not only benefits the economy but also contributes to job creation and GDP growth.
The EVC highlighted the role of robust broadband infrastructure in transforming industries and making the Nigerian economy digitally competitive globally.
To sustain the growth of the telecoms sector, NCC will continue to create a conducive environment for the deployment of broadband infrastructure, ensuring improved Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for telecom consumers.
This infrastructure is vital for Nigeria’s transition to an Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-driven economy, enhancing its global digital competitiveness.
The NCC’s report reflects the increasing importance of telecommunications and internet services in Nigeria, underlining the need for continued investment in digital infrastructure and skills development.
