Niles picks up red as Leicester thrashes Arsenal 3-0

Jamie Vardy netted twice as Leicester inflicted a severe blow to Arsenal’s slim hopes of making the Champions League next season with an incredible win at the King Power Stadium, Leicester’s home.

The unmarked Youri Tielemans scored a header in a beautifully placed cross from James Maddison just before the hour mark, before Vardy fired late on with a header and a tap-in from close range.

Arsenal played close to 60 minutes of the game with just 10 men after Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off.

This makes it the third successive Premier League defeat left them a point behind Chelsea, who are on fourth place and who’ll battle Manchester United at Old Trafford at 16.30 BST on Sunday.

Leicester still have a very slim chance of finishing on seventh place – they are just five points behind Wolves – which could earn a Europa League place which depends heavily on the outcome of the FA Cup final.

The Gunners task was made significantly harder after Maitland-Niles was shown red for the first time in his entire career following two bookings in the space of just 28 minutes – for a soft foul on Ben Chilwell and then needlessly scything down Maddison near the halfway line.

However, a three-goal margin left Arsenal humiliated and, even with a full squad, it is difficult to have envisaged a different outcome such was the conviction of the performance of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester.

However, Arsenal were also indebted to goalkeeper Bernd Leno for a series of very fine saves, the pick a magnificent one-handed diving effort to paw away a Wilfred Ndidi header.

Arsenal fans must have had enough of Vardy, such is the England’s striker’s potency against them.

He has netted eight beautiful goals in as many matches against Arsenal – and now has 10 goals in his past nine appearances against any opposition.
