NLC, TUC give Nov 8 nationwide strike notice over attacks on Ajaero

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a strike notice to the Federal Government, set for November 8, in response to the recent attacks, abduction, and assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other labor leaders.

During a briefing on Friday, the leaders of NLC and TUC presented a six-point demand to the Federal Government, which includes the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State and the Area Commander, along with other officials, for their alleged involvement in the brutalization and humiliation of Comrade Ajaero and other workers.

The incident in question involved suspected state agents and security operatives who descended upon Ajaero and other labor leaders, vandalizing their vehicles, causing injuries, and robbing them of their mobile phones, money, ATM cards, and other valuables.

These labor leaders had gathered at the NLC State secretariat in Owerri for a scheduled protest addressing various labor-related issues, including unpaid salaries and allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

The attack and mistreatment of Ajaero have sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across the nation. Leaders of NLC and TUC are set to convene next Tuesday to determine an appropriate course of action in response to the assault.
