NLC, TUC set to commence nationwide strike midnight

by Alice Babalola

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly declared their intention to commence the planned nationwide strike from midnight today.

The decision stems from the assault on the NLC President and other leaders in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as unresolved labor issues in the state.

The labor unions had previously resolved on November 7 to implement a nationwide strike by Tuesday, November 14, if their demands were not addressed.

The incident in Owerri involved suspected state agents and security operatives attacking Ajaero and other labor leaders, damaging their vehicles, causing injuries, and forcefully taking possessions such as phones, money, and ATM cards during a scheduled protest at the NLC State secretariat on November 1.

The NLC President and other national leaders, along with their TUC counterparts, were protesting various grievances, including unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

The assault on Ajaero and others has sparked widespread condemnation and outrage across the country and beyond.
