The House of Representatives is set to investigate the funds allocated for the postponed 2023 population and housing census, managed by the National Population Commission (NPC).
This decision was reached on Wednesday during a parliamentary session following a motion presented by Honourable Dominic Okafor.
Okafor’s motion brought to the lawmakers’ attention the significant sum of 200 billion naira that has been expended on the census.
However, there was a notable difference in opinion among the lawmakers regarding the feasibility of conducting the census this year, primarily due to ongoing security challenges.
President Muhammadu Buhari had previously approved the postponement of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, originally scheduled for May 3 to 7.
The new date for the census will be determined by the incoming administration.
The census, initially planned for May 3 to 7, 2023, was indefinitely deferred by former President Muhammadu Buhari in April.
This decision was made after a meeting with key members of the Federal Executive Council and the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwarra, and his team.
