Reps urges FG to prioritize for urban residents, others

The Chairman of the House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, Awaji Abiante, has called upon the Federal Government to prioritize the well-being of urban dwellers and vulnerable individuals living in cities across Nigeria.

This appeal was made during a meeting in Abuja with relevant stakeholders to discuss the implementation of integrated and sustainable urban development and physical planning throughout the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Emphasizing the connection between urbanization and development, Abiante highlighted the importance of establishing a national consensus on integrated and sustainable urban development and physical planning as part of the broader national urban and regional development agenda.

Abiante stressed the need for comprehensive and forward-thinking planning, especially in providing affordable and adequate housing and other essential amenities for the urban poor and vulnerable groups.

He underscored the commitment to implementing new directions in urban development outlined in the approved National Housing and Urban Development Policies.

Furthermore, Abiante urged proper planning and utilization of territorial spaces to prevent the deterioration of urban settlements into slums.

He emphasized the imperative of addressing the fundamentals to fully harness the opportunities for accelerated national transformation through the creation of integrated and productive communities.

Acknowledging the significant rate of urbanization in Nigeria over the past decades, Abiante emphasized the collaboration required among the Federal, State, and Local Governments to achieve the goal of urbanization in the country.

He commended the efforts of State Governments in promoting the urban agenda through initiatives such as the development of new towns and the implementation of urban renewal and slum upgrading schemes.
