Subsidy Removal a challenging decision to rescue Nigeria from crisis —Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to remain resolute, stating that his decision to remove subsidy, albeit sudden, is aimed at saving Nigeria from imminent collapse.

In a nationwide address on the occasion of the 2023 Democracy Day in Abuja, the president acknowledged that the removal of subsidies would exacerbate the hardships faced by Nigerians.

However, he assured the nation of significant investments in transportation, healthcare, infrastructure, education, and other essential sectors.

Tinubu also pledged that his administration would draw inspiration from the ideologies of MKO Abiola, prioritizing the well-being of the people over the personal interests of the ruling class.

He emphasized the importance of creating a society where citizens can achieve personal fulfillment and happiness.

He stated, “During my inauguration speech on May 29, I implemented the decision made by my predecessor to eliminate the burden of fuel subsidies, liberating crucial resources for collective benefit that were previously monopolized by a privileged few. I understand the difficulties this decision imposes on our people. I share your pain. However, this sacrifice is necessary to rescue our nation from collapse and release our resources from the grip of a small number of unpatriotic individuals.”

Tinubu urged Nigerians to endure the temporary hardships, promising that his government would reciprocate their trust and support through substantial investments in transportation infrastructure, education, consistent power supply, healthcare, and other public utilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life.

He concluded by calling for a renewed dedication to the principles of the democratic system that MKO Abiola stood for, a system that prioritizes the welfare of the people and fosters personal fulfillment and happiness.

Tinubu urged all elected officials to rededicate themselves to selfless service, fulfilling their electoral promises and delivering tangible benefits to the citizens.

“On my part and that of my administration, I pledge anew our commitment to diligently fulfilling every component of our electoral pact with the people – the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda”, he added.
