Subsidy Removal: House of Reps commends proposed minimum wage increase

The House of Representatives has expressed its approval of the planned upward review of the national minimum wage, as announced by President Bola Tinubu in a recent national broadcast.

The lawmakers assured Nigerian workers that they would carefully consider and approve the proposal once it is transmitted to the National Assembly by the presidency.

In a statement, Akin Rotimi, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, stated that the House also welcomes the palliative measures announced by President Bola Tinubu to mitigate the adverse economic effects resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy.

The House emphasized that interventions in the manufacturing sector, including support for small and medium-scale enterprises, along with other integrated measures, will play a crucial role in stimulating economic productivity, boosting agriculture production, creating jobs, and enhancing living conditions.

Moreover, the House pledged to fulfill its constitutional obligations by actively monitoring all government entities responsible for the implementation of the palliative measures.

President Tinubu, during his nationwide broadcast, had assured the workers that their salary review was forthcoming.

“I want to tell our workers this: Your salary review is coming. Once we agree on the new minimum wage and general upward review, we will make budget provision for its immediate implementation,” Tinubu said.

The House of Representatives’ welcome and commitment to addressing the proposed minimum wage increase indicate progress towards improving the economic conditions and welfare of Nigerian workers in the wake of the subsidy removal.
