As part of the African Development Bank’s effort to improve infrastructure in Nigeria, Kano State is set to get $110 million of $563 million the bank is providing.

The $563 million funds would be spent on developing rural roads, transport infrastructure, water, sanitation, and agricultural productivity in Nigeria, The Cable reports.

AfDB President, Akinwumi Adesina, disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, stating that Kano would get $110 million out of the earmarked amount.

He said, “We are spending $110 million in Kano for our programme on special agricultural industrial processing zone. We are, in all, have about $563 million that will be dedicated to that project in various states of Nigeria. With this $110million that will be used for Kano State, just imagine what we could do. Investing in rural roads, transport infrastructure, water and sanitation, we will also invest in agricultural productivity to raise the production of food. With this programme of hundreds of US dollars, we will help develop consolidated infrastructure in rural areas. That will allow private sector food and agribusiness companies to reduce the number of losses they have, create a more competitive value chain, transform the rural areas from the zones of misery to the zone of economic prosperity and increase the number of resources the state has,”

The governor, on the other hand, commended the assured AfDB president of the government’s readiness to ensure the successful implementation of the projects the fund have been provided for.

Ganduje also stated his desire to develop Kano to the status of a megacity where basic infrastructure is not lacking adding that the fund would help achieve his aim.

Ganduje said “This is what we mean by genuine development when institutions are strengthened and individuals or groups of individuals are directly impacted, this is what we mean by genuine development. My dream is to promote Kano into a megacity, which is not only a collection of the population but also, a collection of an environment where things are working, where traffic flows, where health services are excellent. This is aimed at reducing medical tourism abroad and where you can have security using technology,”

President of the Africa Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, has been cleared of all corruption charges by an independent review panel led by the former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson.

It was alleged that the bank had been tarred by poor governance, impunity, personal enrichment and favouritism under Adesina’s leadership. In spite of Adesina’s insistence of being innocent and also being cleared of the charges by an ethics committee of the bank,  the US insisted on an independent investigation with the North American country’s treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin saying that they have ” deep reservations about the integrity of the committee’s process”.

Adesina who is the sole candidate for the bank’s upcoming election has now been cleared of same charges by an independent review panel. It was further gathered that the evidence provided by Adesina in his own statements before the panel, was found to be “consistent with his innocence and to be persuasive”.

The panel wrote in its report “The panel concurs with the committee in its findings in respect of all the allegations against the president and finds that they were properly considered and dismissed by the committee.  It took proper note of the criteria laid down for evaluating complaints and the sufficiency of supporting evidence. It consulted PIAC and the auditor-general. It engaged in discussion and debate of each individual complaint and reached a consensus on the outcome. It applied the correct standard and prepared a report for submission to the chairperson of the bureau of the board of governors”.

The Boards of Governors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has finally bowed to US pressure and has ordered an independent probe of President of the bank Akinwumi Adesina.

The board of governors reached the decision on Thursday June 4, in spite of sitting and former African leaders’ campaign for the bank to ignore the call for an independent investigation of allegations against Adesina as he has already been cleared by the bank’s ethics committee.

In a communique signed by the Chairperson of the bank’s Bureau of the Boards of Governors Niale Kaba, it was gathered that the independent review will be carried out by a neutral high calibre individuals with unquestionable experience, high international reputation and integrity within a short time period of not more than two to four weeks maximum.

It reads “The Bureau reiterates that it agrees that the Ethics Committee of the Boards of Directors performed its role on this matter in accordance with the applicable rule under Resolution B/BG/2008/11 of the Board of Governors. The Bureau also reiterates that the Chairperson of the Bureau of the Board of governors performed her role in accepting the findings of the Ethics Committee in accordance with the said Resolution. However, based on the views of some Governors on the matter and the need to carry every Governor along in resolving it, the Bureau agrees to authorize an Independent Review of the Report of the Ethics Committee of the Boards of Directors relative to the allegations considered by the Ethics Committee and the submissions made by the President of the Bank Group thereto in the interest of due process. The Independent Review shall be conducted by a neutral high calibre individual with unquestionable experience, high international reputation and integrity within a short time period of not more than two to four weeks maximum, taking the Bank Group’s electoral calendar into account. The Bureau agrees that, within a three to six month period and following the independent review of the Ethics Committee Report, an independent comprehensive review of the implementation of the Bank Group’s Whistle-Blowing and Complaints Handling Policy should be conducted with a view to ensuring that the Policy is properly implemented, and revising it where necessary, to avoid situations of this nature in the future.”
