Joe Biden’s administration has issued a regional emergency declaration for 17 states and Washington, D.C., to keep fuel supply lines open after a cyberattack on Colonial Pipeline’s infrastructure on Friday, May 7.

Friday night’s cyberattack is “the most significant, successful attack on energy infrastructure” known to have occurred in the U.S., according to Politico.

Colonial Pipeline carries 45% of fuel supplies in the eastern U.S. Some 5,500 miles of the pipeline has been shut down in response to the attack.

While gasoline and diesel prices aren’t expected to be impacted if pipeline operations resume in the next few days, fuel suppliers are becoming “increasingly nervous” about possible shortages, Bloomberg reports.

Colonial said in a statement Sunday while its main fuel lines remained offline, some smaller lines between terminals and delivery points were now operational.

He said “We will bring our full system back online only when we believe it is safe to do so and in full compliance with the approval of all federal regulations”

The US said it’s “working with” fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline to try and restart operations as soon as possible.

The regional emergency declaration by the Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is so that fuel supply lines can be kept open.

The emergency declaration covers Alabama, Arkansas, D.C., Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

The DoT agency said in a statement the declaration “addresses the emergency conditions creating a need for immediate transportation of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other refined petroleum products and provides necessary relief.”

The attack is a significant breach of critical infrastructure and comes on the heels of multiple other major cyberattacks on both U.S. companies and the federal government in recent months by foreign actors.

Sen. Tim Kaine has secured enough Republican votes to pass a revised version of his resolution to curb President Donald Trump’s military efforts in Iran.

Kaine said Tuesday the new resolution now has support from Republican Sens. Todd Young of Indiana and Susan Collins of Maine, giving him the four GOP votes he needs for it to pass. Republicans Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky also back it.

“[I] expect to vote for — if offered the opportunity — the amended Kaine resolution,” Young said earlier Tuesday, emphasizing that he did not support the initial draft. “It’s important that Congress at this time affirm our Article I responsibilities, so long as we don’t undermine the president’s Article II responsibilities, that’s all the Kaine resolution says.”

Collins on Tuesday said Congress can’t be sidelined on important decisions.

“The Kaine resolution would continue to allow the President to respond to emergencies created by aggression from any hostile nation, including Iran, and to repel an imminent attack by Iran or its proxy forces,” she said in a statement. “It simply makes clear that only the Legislative Branch may declare war or commit our armed forces to a sustained military conflict with Iran.”

Lee and Paul said last week they would also back Kaine’s resolution after some changes to its language. Lee announced his support after top Trump administration officials briefed lawmakers about the killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, which the Utah Republican described as “the worst” he’d seen on a military issue in his nine years in the Senate.

A man who police reported was driving drunk in South Carolina crashed — after apparently being unable to hit the brakes — into a brakes shop.

Jaderric Freeman, aged 21, of Montgomery, Ala., was apprehended early on Saturday morning after driving into Brakes 4 Less in Greenville, the police department said.

Freeman allegedly hit another car, lost control of his own vehicle and crashed into the business before “then damaging several more cars inside.”

The man was transported to a medical facility to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Freeman was charged with driving under the influence.

An Alabama man convicted of abusing five underage girls sexually was sentenced to more than 600 years in prison on Wednesday.

Houston County Circuit Judge Todd Derrick placed a 615-year sentence on Raven Smith after hearing a plea from the mother of one of the girls.

“I can’t believe what I said meant that much to a judge to punish this man the way I wanted him to be (punished),” the unidentified mother told WTVY-TV.

Smith, aged 35, openly admitted to the sex crimes against the girls — all under the age of 16 — and apologized to them in court. He was charged with multiple counts of sodomy, sexual abuse, and rape.

District Attorney J.T. Jones almost teared up while describing Smith’s crimes to the judge.

“When you deal with cases that involve children, particularly young children, it’s going to hit your heartstrings every time,” Jones said. “You get to know them [the victims] and you feel the pain they go through.”

The mother who made the powerful plea said that she strongly believes that there are other victims of Smith who are too afraid to come forward.

“I don’t want them to be afraid anymore,” she said. “I want them to know he’s in jail and can’t ever hurt them or anyone else.”
