Ajewole was gruesomely murdered by yet-to-be-identified gunmen at the front of his house in the Orogun community in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state, on Monday, while returning home.

ASUU, in a statement by its Chairman, Ayo Akinwole, further called on IGP Baba to assist the state Police Command with all logistics support needed to unravel and arrest the killers of the deceased.

Akinwole also urged Tinubu to take a passionate interest in the case and ensure the security system unmasks the faces behind the murder of the institution’s lecturer.

He said, “The hearts of every ASUU-UI member are bleeding so profusely as if pierced by swords. Our bones shook so tremendously that it was as if our marrows were naked in the tundra region.

We condemn in totality the gruesome murder of our comrade, Ajewole, and charge the security operatives to track down and apprehend the perpetrators of this dastardly act, with a view to unravelling the motive behind the incident and bringing the perpetrators to book.

“The only tribute which the death of Ajewole deserves is that his killers are brought to justice and that Nigerians’ lives should matter to the Tinubu presidency. Ajewole’s gruesome murder again reminds us of how valueless human lives have become in our clime.

“Death lurks in all imaginable and unimaginable corners of this country and comes cheaply. The Nigerian populace is constantly assailed by terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, assassination, hunger, unemployment, and many more insidious exterminators of our individual and collective dreams.

“The situation of the Nigerian academics is even doubly precarious; they are prophets without any honour at home. Despite their immense contributions to national growth and development and recognition in the international circle, Nigerian academia is scorned and shabbily treated by the Nigerian state and the public for being unrepentant patriots.”

In one of the court documents released by the FBI, it was alleged that Kyari received a bribe from Hushpuppi to facilitate the arrest and imprisonment of a member of his online fraud gang identified as Chibuzo Vincent.

The police force in a statement released by its spokesperson, Frank Mba, says the police boss has now ordered an internal review of the allegations. The force says it is committed to the pursuit of justice and strengthening of professional relationships with the FBI. The force also promised to avail the public of developments as the case unfolds.

Read the statement below “Following the receipt of allegation and indictment processes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against one of the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, DCP Abba Kyari in the Hushpuppi scam ongoing investigation into the Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba psc (+), NPM, fdc has ordered an internal review of the allegations. The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to the pursuit of justice and the strengthening of its professional relationship with the FBI and other international partners. Further developments on this case will be communicated to members of the public accordingly”

The Federal government in 2017 proscribed the secessionist group.

Speaking with journalists after he was confirmed by the police council on Friday, June 4, Alkali said “There are peculiarities, like I said before, in the South-East and South-South is the issue of secessionist agenda championed by IPOB, I also talked about terrorism and religious bigotry in the north-east, I also talked about the issue of kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry and cultism as it affects the north-central and north-west and south-west. I gave a synopsis in terms of what we are doing to address this situation. I also thanked Mr President for providing additional logistics in terms of carrying out our duties and responsibilities. In collaboration with other security agencies, we try to checkmate other forms of lawlessness, criminality and unlawful agitation in order to ensure lives and property are saved and at the same time allow Nigerian citizens go about their lawful business. What is seriously worrisome in the south-east, but it is gradually being checked and results are positive as regards the attacks and killings of security agents and assets belonging to the federal government. Our ability to checkmate this lawlessness has improved and we are getting closer to something positive. The issue is IPOB is a proscribed organisation and we expect nobody to belong to the IPOB. Thuggery is an offence and anyone will be dealt with according to the law. They are all offenders. It’s just like me differentiating between an armed robber and a thug. It’s the level of crime that matters. There is no way we can say this is IPOB or a thug, it all depends on the level of crime.”

Speaking at his maiden meeting with Command Police Commissioners and zonal AIGs, in Abuja on Thursday, Baba said the IGP Monitoring Units will be re-organised.

The development is coming 24 hours after the Police Service Commission asked the IGP to check the proliferation of police investigating units.

The commission stated that the units were bringing huge embarrassments to the force.

The commission Chairman, Musiliu Smith, said there must be proper and close monitoring of police investigative units to stem the atrocities its officials committed in the line of duty.

The retired IGP had also stressed the need to quickly treat cases of misconduct by the officers “so that those found wanting are brought to book”.
