The National Emergency Management Agency on Thursday said two bodies have so far been recovered from the scene of the BRT bus-train accident at the Ikeja area of Lagos State.

InsideOjodu recalls that a passenger train collided with a Lagos state government BRT staff bus at PWD junction in the Ikeja area in the state on Thursday, injuring an unspecified number of persons.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, Mr Fidet Okhiria, gave an account of the brief he got on the accident involving a train and a bus earlier in the day.

The NRC train was involved in an accident with a Lagos State Government staff bus on the rail track in Sogunle area of Lagos.

Okhiria told NAN in Lagos that, “information I gathered at the scene of the incident, they said many cars stopped when they got to the level crossing while the Lagos State Staff Bus driver continued moving, which I don’t know why.

“Maybe the driver thought he could pass before the train got nearer to him. He could not pass, then the train crushed the bus; that is what we gathered.

“The train was coming from Ijoko to Iddo.”

He urged Lagos drivers to be more careful when passing through the level crossing, to avoid train accidents.

The managing director, who was concerned about the lives of the Lagos State staff, appealed to motorists to consider the level crossing at all times.

Okhiria said that when motorists get to the level crossing, they should not ignore the point where they should stop.

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Mr Taofiq Adebayo, had said in a statement that a Lagos State Government staff bus was crushed by a moving train at PWD, Ikeja.

Adebayo said that the staff bus was with registration no 04A- 48LA.

He said that the enforcement officers of LASTMA were the first emergency responders at the scene of the accident.

Adebayo said they had called other emergency responders to join in the rescue.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has concluded all necessary arrangements to enforce Traffic Laws on some recalcitrant Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) bus drivers across the State.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba disclosed this today during a courtesy visit by a delegation from LAMATA led by its Director of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi to the Agency’s Headquarters at Oshodi, Lagos.

He stated that the enforcement of Traffic Laws on reckless BRT bus operators became imperative following a series of complaints from members of the public on the recalcitrant attitude of some of the drivers, particularly at major intersections across the metropolis.

His words: “It would no longer be business as usual for some of the BRT drivers who regularly violate traffic rules and regulations without regard to the law and causing avoidable traffic obstructions on major roads across the State”

The General Manager emphasised that any LAMATA bus driver caught driving against traffic one-way, discharging passengers at undesignated bus/stops, or disobeying traffic officers/traffic lights would be dealt with, in accordance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

“LAMATA as a management must as a matter of urgency engage experts on transportation management to train and retrain their operators (drivers) in order to checkmate their excesses”, he said.

Oreagba also appealed to motorists both private and commercial bus drivers to always adhere strictly to all traffic rules and regulations.

Earlier, the Director of Corporate Communication, LAMATA, Mr. Kolawole Ojelabi called for a synergy between LAMATA and LASTMA in traffic management and enforcement.

He assured that LASTMA personnel would henceforth be invited during their quarterly ‘Village Meeting’ to educate and enlighten BRT bus drivers on the basic traffic laws and signs.

According to him: “We are aware of the recklessness of some of these drivers and on a regular basis we sack and blacklist some to prevent them from being employed by another bus service company”.

Ojelabi, however, declared that any bus operator caught violating the State’s traffic laws and regulations must be held accountable in accordance with the Law.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday commissioned the 13.65km Oshodi-Abule-Egba Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, corridor.

He stated that the journey to Abule-Egba from Oshodi, which used to take over an hour, would now be completed in less than 30 minutes.

The Governor also unveiled 560 high and medium capacity buses that will be plying the route in the pilot phase of the scheme.

Sanwo-Olu, while speaking during the inauguration of the BRT system infrastructure at the Dopemu bus shelter, said the ceremony was a fulfilment of his administration’s pledge to significantly improve traffic management and transportation system in the state.

“This is the very first of our six-point development agenda encapsulated as T-H-E-M-E-S. This administration made the pledge knowing that you, our people, are the main reason we have been entrusted with the management of your commonwealth”.

“Although our promise was to deliver this project in May this year, it had to be shifted forward due to the disruption brought about by COVID-19”.

According to the governor, the bus transit system had proven to be an effective means of achieving a fast, reliable and efficient movement of large number of people across the state.

“Since March 2008, when the first phase of this new initiative was launched, thousands of Lagosians have continued to enjoy improved travel experience along the designated routes every day.

In order to ensure that the BRT service is accessible to greater number of our people and in line with the Lagos state strategic transport master plan which seeks to integrate road, water and rail transportation, new corridors and routes are being opened”.

The governor said the project was very significant because of its immense benefits to Lagosians in the different communities it straddles and to visitors.

“This new BRT corridor will bring great relief to over 60,000 commuters who will use this facility daily. Travel time, which is estimated at an average of two hours during peak periods, will be significantly reduced to an average of about thirty minutes. This will translate to improved health of our people, a safer environment, and increased value of socio economic activities in our state.”

While acknowledging that the project was started by his predecessor, Sanwo-Olu said it was one of the dividends of his administration’s investment in the transport sector for efficient traffic management and transportation

“The completion of this project which was commenced by the past administration is one of the dividends of this administration’s investment in the transport sector for efficient traffic management and transportation which we believe is crucial to facilitating the emergence of a smart and 21st-century economy.

“All our actions are geared towards birthing a new commuting order through seamless travel in a near congestion-free state. This administration is very keen to see all transport modes integrated through all our intervention in traffic management and transportation,” Sanwo-Olu said.

In her welcome address earlier, the Managing Director of Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo said the four projects rolled into one attest to the commitment of the Governor to live up to his promise to reform traffic management and public transportation, which is the first pillar of the THEMES agenda of the Governor.

“Mr. Governor, permit me to state that the socio-economic importance of the project cannot be over-emphasized. The Oshodi – Abule-Egba Corridor is undoubtedly one of the busiest 13.65km long bus corridors in West Africa, with over 5,500 mini-buses moving passengers per day.

“It is a major link for millions of Lagosians who commute in and out of Alimosho, Egbeda, Ijaiye, Iyana-Ipaja and other places to other parts of Lagos or to neighbouring Ogun state and the Republic of Benin.

“This new BRT corridor will bring about an improved mobility with the capacity to move over 350, 000 passengers per day, reduce travel time by at least 35%, enhance social and economic development along the corridor and enhance the projection of Lagos as a world class society amongst others,” she said.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved an average of 46 per cent increase on bus services on the routes operated by the Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL).

The Assistant Director, Corporate Communication, at the Lagos Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LAMATA), Mr. Kolawole Ojelabi, who disclosed this in a statement, announced that the increase takes effect from August 1.

According to the statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu gave his consent to the bus fare review following a plea by the bus operating company on the need to sustain its operation because of the negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on public bus transportation.

The statement also revealed that the governor also approved LBSL’s request to increase the number of passengers per bus from 20 to 42 in observance of updated COVID-19 protocol.

Recall that the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had directed that bus can only take 50% capacity of its usual trip in the operation of public transport in order to ensure social distancing and curb the spread of COVID-19.

Sanwo-Olu granted LBSL buses permission to access dedicated bus lanes in Lagos State, thus making their journey times predictable on corridors with bus dedicated lanes.

LBSL had argued that conveying not more than 20 passengers per bus, per trip, had resulted in only 14 per cent utilisation of the bus load factor, leading to 72 per cent drop in revenue, while the running costs remained fairly the same.

It said the fare increase would improve LBSL’s operational efficiency and place the bus operating company on the path to sustainability in the medium to long term.
