Denmark captain Simon Kjaer and the medical team are the recipients of this year’s Uefa President’s Award for saving Christian Eriksen’s life. Eriksen, 29, suffered cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 defeat by Finland in Copenhagen on 12 June, with Kjaer and the stadium’s medical staff reacting quickly to help resuscitate him on the pitch.

The AC Milan defender, 32, put Eriksen in the recovery position and started the initial CPR procedure before leading the Danish players to form a ring around Eriksen as he received medical attention and comforted Eriksen’s partner.

Kjaer said “It’s something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives, the team reacted as a unit…as a team, we made the maximum effort to stick together and try to get through that situation and be as helpful as possible. I try to lead the team on and off the pitch, in every aspect of life, as footballers, when we’re together. I think it’s one of the biggest privileges I have had in my career. I’ve known Christian for many years. He has a great family, he has a lot of friends, a lot of teammates that want the best for him. As long as he’s happy and his family is good, I’m happy.”

The medical team responded quickly and resuscitated Eriksen with CPR and a defibrillator before he was stretchered off and taken to the hospital.

Mogens Kreutzfeldt “We rushed to the field to help [Christian] and to do our job, we did what we should, what we were taught, what we were trained to do. Everybody knew their role, everybody knew what to do. We were not emotional at the scene. Afterwards, we were, of course, like everybody. We’re very happy and proud of the outcome”

Inter Milan midfielder, Christian Eriksen has returned to the club’s training ground for the first time since his cardiac arrest at the Euro 2020.

Eriksen was taken to a hospital in Denmark on June 12 after collapsing on the field during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener with Finland.

The former Tottenham Hotspur player spent a week in the hospital, where he had a successful operation to fit a heart-starting device called an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, or ICD.

The 29-year-old returned to Inter Milan’s Suning Training Centre in Appiano Gentile on Wednesday morning and the Italian club said he was in “excellent physical condition”.

In a statement, the club said: “Eriksen, who greeted managers, coaches, team-mates and all the staff present, is fine and in excellent mental and physical condition. Eriksen will follow the recovery programme proposed by the Danish doctors in Copenhagen, who will coordinate all the clinical follow-up and will always keep the Inter Milan medical staff informed.”

He is due to undergo further tests in Italy and is not expected to be back training for several months.

UEFA has invited Christian Eriksen, his wife, and the six paramedics who saved his life to the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley on Sunday, July 11.

Recall the Denmark football star collapsed on the pitch during his side’s opening group game against Finland last month and was resuscitated by paramedics. CPR was administered and his heart was restarted with a defibrillator as players shielded the medics.

UEFA said Eriksen, his wife and six medics were invited to the final, but there was no confirmation he would attend.

There is no confirmation on whether Eriksen will be in London yet as he is recovering at home.

Danish player, Christian Eriksen is unlikely to play again after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Euro 2020 tournament during Saturday’s Group B clash between Denmark and Finland on Saturday evening, June 12.

Eriksen fell to the ground in shocking scenes at the Parken Stadium, soon before half-time and was treated on the pitch before being taken to hospital.

The first-round match was suspended with players from both sides in clear distress before resuming some two hours later after Eriksen was said to be in a stable condition. Now, cardiologist Professor Sanjay Sharma, who previously worked with Eriksen at Tottenham Hotspur, says he doubts the player will continue playing football.

Sharma, professor of sports cardiology at London’s St George’s University, said football bodies and medical practitioners were likely to be “very strict” about allowing Eriksen to play again.

Sharma said: “Clearly something went terribly wrong. But they managed to get him back, the question is what happened? And why did it happen? This guy had normal tests all the way up to 2019 so how do you explain this cardiac arrest?”

Sharma, who chairs the English FA’s expert cardiac consensus group, said there were multiple reasons a cardiac arrest could have happened, such as high temperatures or an unidentified condition.

But he said reports after the match that Eriksen was awake in the hospital were “a very good sign. I’m very pleased. The fact he’s stable and awake, his outlook is going to be very good, I don’t know whether he’ll ever play football again. Without putting it too bluntly, he died today, albeit for a few minutes, but he did die and would the medical professional allow him to die again? The answer is no. The good news is he will live, the bad news is he was coming to the end of his career, so would he play another professional football game, that I can’t say. In the UK he wouldn’t play. We’d be very strict about it.”
