A combined team of soldiers and operatives from Osun Command of Department of State Services on Monday, December 28, arrested six members of Coalition for Revolution in Osun State while they were planning to converge for a walk-in Osogbo, the state capital.

An osogbo-based human rights lawyer, Alfred Adegoke said those arrested were later moved to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo where they were detained.

Adegoke who alleged that two of the men were brutalised by the security operatives, said they were released after he intervened.

Recounting how they were arrested, one of the protesters Prince Adeyeye Adeyemi said “Michael Akande, Adediji Opeyemi, Akinyemi Morakinyo, Olakunle Moses and Adedoyin Temitope, who are members of Coalition for Revolution, had joined me for a walk in the Ayetoro area. We came out Monday morning for the exercise; we have not even commenced the walk when 14 trucks filled with soldiers and DSS operatives arrived at the scene. They just packed us into the vehicles and took us to the Dugbe police station. From there, we were taken to the SCID of the Osun Police Command. We were beaten and brutalised by the security men. We were later released after the intervention of our legal team, led by Barrister Alfred Adegoke. The security men did not tell us why we were arrested.”

The organisers of the #RevolutionNow protest have said that the protests will hold as planned despite the arrest of its leader, Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore was arrested on Saturday by the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a statement signed by Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, the organisers said “We have confirmed that Omoyele Sowore, the leader of the #RevolutionNow protests, has been arrested. This arrest is not surprising to us. We know that the presidency has tried everything in their powers to discredit and dampen our struggle. For the past three days, the presidency has paid social media influencers hugely and such others to discredit the #RevolutionNow all to no avail! The presidency even went as far as attacking Amnesty International, believing that their blackmails would appeal to Nigerians. They also paid some ex-activists to counter us publicly but the mass of working people stood by #RevolutionNow!” Also speaking on behalf of the Lagos branch of the African Action Congress (AAC), Ajayi called for more mobilization in defiance to the government. Lagos branch of the African Action Congress (AAC) condemns Sowore’s arrest and Buhari’s stubborn and cruel antidemocratic credentials. We believe that the #RevolutionNow will outlive all forces of repression, particularly the Buhari Presidency. We call on the Coalition for Revolution (CORE) and other organizers to continue with mobilization. A failed government cannot use force to make the mass of people to accept its failure.”
